Sonic R hits the track on MorphOS

BeWorld brings SonicR 1.0 to MorphOS, a reimplementation of the racing game by Traveller's Tales released in 1997 on the Saturn and then on PC. The idea behind it was a simple one: have Sonic and his friends race on foot around five three-dimensional courses, packed with shortcuts, rings and characters to unlock. The code comes from jnmartin84's project, rebuilt in portable C from the 1998 PC executable.

This first MorphOS release is built on SDL 2, ALT-ENTER switches between windowed and fullscreen with the resolution adjusting automatically, and F11 shows the frame rate, capped at 30 as in the original. LAN multiplayer works.

The game data is not included: copy the whole contents of the CD into the DATA/ drawer. Requires MorphOS 3.20, a 3D card and SDL 2.32.11 or newer. The author welcomes donations.

Heretic II finally rises from its crypt on MorphOS

Papiosaur brings Heretic II to MorphOS, the 1998 action adventure by Raven Software, built on Heretic2R, the reverse-engineered source port by m-x-d (R5 engine). Corvus comes home to Silverspring and finds the city rotting under the Seraph's plague; he has to fight his way out in third person, with a staff, a bow and a spellbook. It runs on the Quake II engine, and was the first game to put a camera that follows the character behind it.

The soundtrack, originally played from the audio tracks of the CD, is now read as Ogg Vorbis: track02.ogg to track14.ogg in base/music, encoded from your own disc. With no music drawer the game runs silent, with no other consequence.

The game data is not included and cannot be: Heretic II is still sold on GOG and Steam. Copy the contents of the base folder of a PC install into the archive's base/ drawer, everything except the .dll files, and that data must be patched to v1.06 (the "Heretic II Enhancement Pack"), or models and textures will be missing. Requires MorphOS 3.20 and SDL2.

MorphOS-CDPlayer 1.2 plays the disc to the end

Playback stopped at the end of a track instead of moving on to the next one. Ten days after the previous release, Bernd Assenmacher's audio CD player puts that right.

Stability improvements, a few cosmetic touches and an updated guide round off the release. It is free, and the author welcomes donations.

BlackIvan 3.00 reshuffles the deck

J.C. Herran Martin releases BlackIvan 3.00, his take on casino blackjack. The idea has not changed: beat Nikky, a tough player, as fast as you can to get your name into the Hall of Fame.

The game has been recompiled with Hollywood 11 and now carries its plugins inside the executable, the zip one excepted. On the menu: new background music, new graphics, a new rival and a pile of fixes. A password can keep minors out, an adult mode is unlocked by a keyfile you ask the author for, and extra card decks can be downloaded from his website. It needs charsets.library and reqtools.library.

Papio-Office 2.2 adds Cardex and lets objects travel between its programs

Papiosaur releases Papio-Office 2.2, the office suite for MorphOS. A sixth program joins the drawer, and the other five finally learn to talk to each other.

Cardex 1.0 is a card file you define yourself: a layout says what the fields are, the grid follows. A search box filters the cards as you type, and the cards leave again as a mail merge into Stylos, as sheets of address labels or as a PDF. Cardex is free for anyone registered for the whole suite.

Copy and paste now carries formatting between Stylos, Diapos and Sigma: a text frame pasted into Diapos becomes a text box, and a range copied from Sigma keeps its colours and its borders. The print preview has been redone: it shows the sheet as it comes out, and much faster than before.

Stylos 4.2 takes its text frames seriously: full formatting inside the frame, text wrapping around it, mail merge. On the Word side, text boxes and shapes come in as frames, and a document opens in its own font, lines and pages breaking where Word breaks them.

As for the rest: Sigma 3.6 hides rows and columns, Diapos 1.9 checks the spelling in the slides, and NoPaper 1.4 opens a PDF about twice as fast.

The drawer holds Stylos 4.2, Sigma 3.6, Diapos 1.9, IPP-PrintScan, NoPaper 1.4 and Cardex 1.0, sharing their fonts, one Ghostscript and one OCR engine. MorphOS 3.20 is required. It is shareware: each program can be tried as a demo, and Papio-RegTool allow to register you — €89.90 for the entire suite, future updates included.

TelegramAmiga 0.0.93: emoji arrive, and the login codes come back

Michele Dipace releases TelegramAmiga 0.0.93, his native Telegram client, which speaks MTProto straight from the machine. Emoji make their entrance: Amiga+E opens a panel above the composer, they are drawn as pictures both while typing and in received bubbles, and go out as real Unicode, with a setting to fall back on text. A paperclip now opens the attachment requester, and a PNG can at last go out as a photo.

One important fix: Telegram had stopped delivering the in-app login code, which left any fresh install stuck. That is repaired, with an SMS fallback by pressing S. The program remains alpha. Visit the dedicated webpage on MorphOS-Storage.

Koliber 0.9: .pptx both ways

Pawel "Stefkos" Stefanski is moving fast on Koliber, his native presentation program which lays the whole talk out on a borderless canvas and flies the camera from one step to the next, zooming, panning and rotating. 0.9 goes after object styling and PowerPoint interchange.

Every object can now take a fill: plain colour, gradient or image, with rotation. Build steps bring elements in one after another during the show instead of showing everything at once. And .pptx now works both ways: text keeps the size the deck asks for, each deck keeps its own colours, and slide transitions survive the trip.

MorphOS 3.x on PowerPC is required, along with an RTG screen and MUI; TinyGL remains optional for accelerated rendering and FFmpeg is loaded on the fly for video. The program is still beta. Available from the program's page.

Titler 3.0: a wizard, a single window and video textures

Pawel "Stefkos" Stefanski releases Titler 3.0, his native 3D titling and rendering studio for MorphOS. The program builds extruded text from TrueType fonts, lights it, then renders it either live with TinyGL or offline with its own CPU ray tracer, global illumination included.

Three additions in this release. A presentation wizard puts the project together step by step: pick the text, the materials, the lighting and the camera moves, and the scene is ready. The editor now fits in a single window, bringing together the scene, the object properties and the animation timeline. And a video can be used as a texture: the file is decoded by FFmpeg and mapped onto the object.

The rest is unchanged: four renderers, reflections, shadows and transparency, camera animation, model import and glTF export, all of it native PowerPC.

NetFS 3.5: another machine's disk, mounted as a local volume

Philippe Rimauro releases NetFS 3.5, his revised take on the network filesystem Timo Rossi wrote back in the 1990s. The idea: mount another MorphOS or Amiga machine's disk as a local volume, and share ARexx ports from one machine to the other. Mind you, this is not Sun-style NFS: NetFS only talks between Amigas.

This release brings a new crypt mode with signed packets, automatic rekeying and host certification, with a fallback to the old mode should it be needed. Along with it come volume names kept from one boot to the next, proper multiuser support where the remote filesystem allows it, and packet compression that asks less of the CPU.

MorphOS 3.18 or better is required for the PowerPC build, along with a working ethernet network and MUI 3.8 for the graphical tools. The 68k build covers AmigaOS 3.x and runs on AmigaOS 4.x as well. Visit the dedicated webpage on MorphOS-Storage.

MTerm 0.21: XMODEM and 40-line screens

n3 releases MTerm 0.21, a native terminal client for calling BBSes in ANSI, Amiga or Commodore 64 mode. Since 0.19 it has gained the XMODEM protocol, a scaled fullscreen mode, a blinking cursor and even a modem dialing simulation. Each phonebook entry can now pick an 80x25 or 80x40 screen to suit the board being called.
